Who qualifies

Adult Pennsylvania residents who are primarily responsible for regular care of someone who also lives in Pennsylvania: a person 60 or older with functional deficits, or a person of any age with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. The two do not need to be related or live together. Relatives 55 or older raising a child, or caring for an adult 18 to 59 with a disability, who live with the care receiver also qualify.

There is no financial eligibility requirement, but the reimbursement percentage depends on the care receiver's household income, from 100% at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level down to none above 380%. You are not eligible if the caregiver or care receiver is enrolled in Medicaid long-term services and supports (Community HealthChoices or LIFE).

Caregiver Support Program

How to apply

Find your local Area Agency on Aging and apply there. A care manager comes to the care receiver's home, assesses the caregiver's needs and builds a plan of care, which can include reimbursement for respite care.
