Who qualifies

Unpaid caregivers (a spouse, relative or friend) who have primary responsibility for an adult with a functional disability who is not receiving a state or Medicaid funded long-term care service such as COPES or personal care. The caregiver must give an average of at least 40 hours a week of care or supervision, or live with an adult who needs continuous care, must not be paid for the care, and must meet the threshold of the TCARE caregiver assessment.

There is no charge when the care receiver's income is at or below 40% of the state median income for the family size; above that, the care receiver pays part or all of the cost. If local funds run short, area agencies on aging may keep wait lists. Emergency requests are considered first.
