Who qualifies
People on the Elderly Waiver or Alternative Care whose primary caregiver is absent or needs relief. The primary caregiver must be the one principally responsible for the person's care and supervision, and must either not be paid at all or be paid for only part of the time they give care. The caregiver does not have to live with the person.
Respite is short-term care. It covers the supervision and care needed to keep the person healthy and safe, and room and board when the stay is in a licensed setting such as a nursing facility or assisted living. It cannot be added for someone who receives adult foster care or customized living under the Elderly Waiver.
Respite is one of the Elderly Waiver's services. For information on applying for the Elderly Waiver, contact the county or Tribal Nation where you live to schedule a MnCHOICES assessment.
To qualify for the Elderly Waiver you must be 65 or older, be eligible for Medical Assistance, meet nursing home level of care in a MnCHOICES assessment, and need services the waiver can provide for less than the cost of nursing home care.
